Rapid Reaction: Oklahoma State throttles Lamar 59-3

We all had a feeling we knew what was going to happen, the Cowboys just had to put their ink to the page and do it.
And boy did they ever do it.

Oklahoma State (3-0) rolled the Lamar Cardinals in Stillwater 59-3, dominating by scoring rushing touchdown after rushing touchdown and winning a game that was never in question.
What happened, how'd it happen, and what did we take from it? We have you covered right here.
How Oklahoma State won…
Good, old-fashioned power. When you look at the stats, the Pokes didn't exactly rack up the yardage (They had 426 total yards and 155 on the ground), but they rushed for 4 touchdowns in the first half with Jeremy Smith having three of them. There wasn't a player on the team that rushed for more than 50 yards, but Smith (42 yards), J.W. Walsh (45 yards), and Desmond Roland (24 yards) did enough to balance it out and make it work. On the defensive end, aggression and intricate stuns held the Lamar offense at bay.
Player of the game…
I have to give this one to Smith. He ran well in the little space he could find, showed power in the red zone, and did a solid job of protecting the quarterback on passing plays. His intangibles looked the part of an RB1 even though his stats didn't necessarily back it up, but I have a feeling a lot of games will tell that same story this season due to Walsh's ability to run.
What we learned…
This team is scrappy. Things didn't go well for them against Mississippi State in week 1, and they kept fighting and eventually won the game. Tonight, they didn't have their best stuff. Compare it to an ace pitcher that doesn't quite have the command that he usually does on the mound. But they kept fighting, found what works for them, and made it work. Lamar wasn't a Big 12-caliber team, and they were supposed to run through them. So they did.
Stat of the game… Five
There were five rushing touchdowns for Oklahoma State this evening (Three from Smith, one from Roland, and one from Clint Chelf). The only other scores came on a Josh Stewart punt return for a touchdown, a late pass from Chelf to Blake Webb, and a highlight grab by Blake Jackson from Walsh, which leads to my next point…
Highlight play…
When Jackson snared that pass with his left hand as he fell backwards in the end zone, the press box collectively gasped. Jackson's known around Stillwater for dropping the ball, but that might be the most impressive catch by an Oklahoma State player since Tracy Moore leaped into the air at Kyle Field and grabbed a Brandon Weeden pass, then dragged his feet before falling out of the back of the end zone. I'm not sure if there was enough exposure on this broadcast for Jackson's catch to make it to a top play on SportsCenter, but it certainly was impressive.
Uniform Heisman…
I'm giving this one to Calvin Barnett, who busted out some swag that big men usually don't rock. Barnett had the all-white pants and tall socks, and a healthy amount of other accessories to make him look good. There were a few others that were close (Justin Gilbert, Ashton Lampkin), but I'm giving it to the big man today.
Quoted…
"Offensively, we were pretty average. It was tough for our players to get motivated at halftime, but they did okay. I was proud of them, and it was a good win for us." - Coach Mike Gundy
Who's next…
Oklahoma State goes into a bye week this week before travelling to West Virginia the following week and starting Big 12 play. There will be no media luncheon on Monday due to the open week.
