OSU inks two in early signing period

For their 2013 recruiting class, Oklahoma State did not hit the JUCO ranks particularly hard.

From early in recruiting the class, a ready-to-contribute defensive end was on Mike Gundy's wish list. The Cowboys signed four ends in the 2012 class, all from the high school ranks. Only Trace Clark did not redshirt this season. Of OSU's top four DE's this season, only Tyler Johnson is slated to return next season.

Enter three-star Sam Wren from Arizona Western Community College. The 6-3, 260-pounder visited Stillwater 10 days ago, committed shortly thereafter and signed today.

"We certainly need some defensive ends because we're graduating three good players and we need someone who can come in and impact us right away and we feel Sam Wren can give us that," Gundy said. "The same thing on the other side of the ball - we need some impact at offensive line. We've got to have guys that can come in and start the season at least as a backup and then work in as they pick up the system. That's really what you're looking for in these two-year guys."

The other side of ball is represented by two-star Brandon Garrett from Trinity Valley (TX) C.C. The 6-6, 285-pounder is being brought in to shore up OSU's depth at offensive tackle, though Joe Wickline has proven he is rarely constrained by labeling players to certain positions.

"Brandon Garrett is getting bigger and stronger and really should be able to help us in our run game and in the pass, because he's got good feet," Gundy said. "Wren, we're expecting him to be a third-down pass rush guy to start until he gets going."

Wren and Garrett will both enroll at mid-term and go through OSU's spring drills in March and April. They are the only expected signees for the Cowboys in the early signing period.
