February 7, 2013Less than 24 hours after putting a timeline on hiring an offensive coordinator at "seven-to-10 days," Oklahoma State head coach announced the hiring of Mike Yurcich as OSU's new offensive coordinator.
Yurcich spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Penn. He held the same responsibilities, plus wide receivers in his previous stop at Edinboro University from 2006-2010.
Yurcich, 37, also spent one season in FBS, serving as a graduate assistant at the University of Indiana.
In his second season at Shippensburg, Yurcich's unit led Division II in total offense (529.2 yards per game) and was second in both scoring (46.9 points per game) and passing (387.7 yards per game). Junior quarterback Zach Zulli won the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2012. The award is Division II's version of the Heisman Trophy. In Yurcich's first season at the helm of the Red Raider offense produced His first team set school records for points, touchdowns, total plays, first downs and total offense.
"Coach Yurcich has 14 years of experience coaching quarterbacks and a thorough background in the passing game," Gundy said. "He has been a very successful offensive coordinator for many years.
"He played quarterback and has been a student of the position as well as a student of offensive football for 14 years," Gundy added. "He will be in place immediately to start getting prepared for spring football."
Yurich is a 1999 graduate of California (PA) University, where he was the school's starting quarterback for three seasons and a team captain for two.
"Joining the program at Oklahoma State is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family," Yurcich said. "I am excited to continue the offensive firepower that has been in place at OSU for many years. I've often admired the OSU system and I'm looking forward to learning and then teaching the Oklahoma State offense."
In addition to his duties as offensive coordinator, Yurcich will also coach the quarterbacks at Oklahoma State.
