Newly-hired Mike Yurcich meets the media for the first time

It took about a month, but we finally heard from the man we don't know much about.

Newly-hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich met the Oklahoma State media for the first time yesterday on a teleconference, and cleared the air after coach Mike Gundy surprised everyone by hiring Yurcich out of Shippensburg University.

There, he dominated opponents with an air-raid system, which is exactly what the Cowboys have in place. Eventually, they'd like him to start building upon it.

"Right now I'm so involved with trying to learn the Oklahoma State offense that I have really not even come close to trying to tweak or adjust or develop the offense," he said. "I'll be honest with you, I don't know where the tweaks will come and when they'll come. The offense is going to be designed around these players and what they can do, but also what we've done in the past."

Yurcich went on to say that he's keeping the same system in place that former OC Dana Holgorsen installed back in 2010 before Todd Monken gave it different wrinkles for the last two seasons.

His next hurdle is figuring out the quarterback situation, which is a huge job in itself.

"Overall, from a personnel standpoint, I'm very impressed," he said. "I'm going to hold back all the assessments on the quarterbacks until I'm able to see them live through spring drills."

That's a huge decision for any offensive coordinator, but especially in a Mike Yurcich offense. At Shippensburg, he coached multiple record-breaking quarterbacks, and regularly led the league in passing and total offense.

But for Yurcich, he's keeping it simple right now. It's no secret that he has his work cut out for him, but I doubt he's looking at it that way.

At the end of the day football is football, whether it's in Boone Pickens Stadium or some pasture a couple miles away.

"I am who I am," he said. "I come from a background that I feel vey fortunate to have been a part of, so I can't say that I was looking over my shoulder and was worried about the next guy or candidates with other experiences. That never really crossed my mind to be honest with you."
